CLEVELAND – Nikola Jokic, the Denver Nuggets’ superstar and reigning MVP, is reportedly considering a review of his contract following growing concerns about the team’s reliance on his performance. The Serbian phenom, known as “The Joker,” has expressed frustration with the Nuggets’ inability to score effectively when he is not on the court.

Jokic’s concerns came to a head after the Nuggets suffered a 126-114 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night, despite his historic performance. The center notched 27 points, 20 rebounds, and 11 assists, marking his 139th career triple-double—surpassing Magic Johnson to claim third place on the all-time list. Yet, his brilliance wasn’t enough to secure a victory.

“You Don’t Lose When I Put on a Show”

Following the game, Jokic candidly addressed the team’s struggles, emphasizing the importance of collective effort. “You don’t lose when I put on a show,” he said. “We need to find ways to score and defend as a team, especially when I’m off the floor. Right now, that’s not happening.”

Coach Michael Malone echoed Jokic’s sentiments, acknowledging the team’s heavy reliance on their star player. “We’ve got to make sure we don’t run him into the ground,” Malone said. Jokic is currently averaging a career-high 37.6 minutes per game, underscoring his pivotal role in the Nuggets’ success.

Cavaliers Shine, Nuggets Falter

While Jokic delivered yet another triple-double, the Cavaliers’ balanced attack and lethal shooting from beyond the arc proved too much for Denver. Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 28 points, while Darius Garland added 24. The Cavs connected on a season-high 22 three-pointers and outscored Denver 66-18 from long range, improving to an impressive 13-1 at home.

Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray chipped in 24 and 19 points, respectively, for the Nuggets, but the team’s defensive struggles on the perimeter allowed Cleveland to dictate the game. “We didn’t do nearly enough to slow them down,” Malone admitted.

A Potential MVP Repeat?

Despite the Nuggets’ inconsistencies, Jokic remains a frontrunner for the MVP award this season. His dominance on both ends of the floor and ability to elevate his teammates have kept Denver competitive. However, the cracks in the team’s structure are becoming more evident, particularly in games where Jokic can’t carry the load alone.

With the Nuggets visiting the struggling Washington Wizards next, the pressure is mounting to find answers. Jokic’s contract situation adds another layer of intrigue to the team’s season. For now, Denver will need to rally around its superstar if they hope to regain their championship form and keep Jokic happy in the Mile High City.
