NSW State of Origin utility Connor Watson is poised to enter a new chapter of his NRL career after becoming the latest Sydney Roosters star affected by a growing selection squeeze ahead of the 2026 season.
The 29-year-old appears set for a permanent move away from the number nine jersey, with circumstances at the club signalling a positional shift that could redefine his role in the Tricolours’ forward pack.
Watson’s situation has been shaped by significant roster changes at the Roosters, most notably the off-season signing of incumbent NSW Blues hooker Reece Robson on a four-year deal. Robson’s arrival, combined with the rapid emergence of Roosters Academy graduate and Toa Samoa hooker Benaiah Ioelu, has created fierce competition at dummy-half, leaving Watson with limited prospects of continuing as the club’s first-choice rake.
Speaking earlier this week, Watson openly acknowledged the reality of the situation, confirming Robson is set to own the hooker role. While reiterating his team-first mentality and willingness to fill any position as required, Watson made it clear that his preferred and most natural role lies at lock forward. He believes the move to number 13 will allow him to play his best football consistently in 2026.
A veteran of 167 NRL matches and five State of Origin appearances for NSW, Watson brings experience, versatility and leadership to the Roosters’ pack. He is confident the positional change will be further enhanced by the arrival of champion halfback Daly Cherry-Evans, whose influence and experience he has already praised as invaluable.
With renewed clarity over his role and excitement about the squad’s direction, Watson is looking ahead to the season opener with optimism. The Sydney Roosters will begin their 2026 NRL campaign against the Warriors in Auckland on Friday, March 6, where Watson is expected to feature prominently in his new-look role at lock.
