American alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has thanked fans for their support as she prepares to undergo further surgery following a serious crash at the Winter Olympics 2026, marking a major setback in what was expected to be her final Olympic appearance.
The 41-year-old suffered a complex fracture of her left tibia after striking a gate just 13 seconds into her downhill run in Cortina. The accident occurred only nine days after she had ruptured ligaments in her left knee, underlining her determination to compete despite recent injury struggles.
Multiple Surgeries and Ongoing Treatment
Vonn was airlifted from the course and taken to hospital in Treviso, Italy, where doctors confirmed the severity of her injury. She has already undergone three operations since the crash, with a fourth surgery scheduled before she returns to the United States for further medical procedures.
In a message shared on Instagram, Vonn said she was “finally feeling more like myself” after several difficult days in hospital but admitted she remains largely immobile and faces a long recovery process. Doctors will conduct further imaging to determine the extent of additional treatment required once she returns home.
Fairytale Ending Denied
The injury brought a dramatic halt to what many had hoped would be a fairytale conclusion to one of the most decorated careers in alpine skiing. Vonn, the Olympic downhill champion at the 2010 Vancouver Games, retired in 2019 as the most successful female skier of her era after battling numerous injuries.
Her surprise return to competition in 2024 followed a partial right knee replacement, and she quickly rediscovered form, securing eight World Cup podium finishes, including two victories. She had been widely tipped to challenge for a medal at her fifth Olympic Games.
Despite suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury shortly before the Olympics in Switzerland, Vonn remained determined to compete in Cortina, a venue where she had previously enjoyed significant success.
Message of Gratitude
While detailing her recovery, Vonn expressed deep gratitude to supporters worldwide, thanking those who sent flowers, letters, and gifts during her hospital stay. She also praised the performances of the United States Olympic Team, saying their achievements at the Games had lifted her spirits.
As she begins rehabilitation following multiple surgeries, Vonn now faces another challenging chapter in a career defined by resilience, determination, and remarkable sporting achievement.
