The Boston Red Sox have made a late roster decision ahead of the start of their 2026 Major League Baseball season, releasing experienced infielder Brendan Rodgers just hours before their Opening Day clash against the Cincinnati Reds.
The move comes as the team finalizes its roster for the new campaign, signaling a difficult end to Rodgers’ short stint with the organization. The 29-year-old had joined the Red Sox as a non-roster invitee during spring training but suffered a right shoulder injury earlier this month. The injury ultimately required surgery, ruling him out of contention for the start of the season and prompting the club’s decision.
Rodgers arrives on the back of a challenging 2025 season with the Houston Astros, where he featured in 43 games. During that period, he posted a .191 batting average, alongside two home runs, 11 RBIs, and 12 runs scored.
Despite recent setbacks, Rodgers’ overall career reflects solid experience at the highest level. A former third overall pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft, he spent the majority of his career with the Colorado Rockies, where he enjoyed his most productive season in 2022. That year, he recorded a .266 batting average, hitting 13 home runs and driving in 63 RBIs across 137 appearances.
