One name drawing growing interest is Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello, a rising star who took a major step forward during the 2025 season. Bello has emerged as a dependable, high-upside starter and is viewed by many around the league as capable of leading a rotation in the near future. For the Padres, who are seeking to reinforce their pitching staff without overextending financially, he represents an intriguing fit.
San Diego’s current rotation plans underline the appeal. Michael King and Nick Pivetta are projected to play key roles, but both have opt-out clauses after the 2026 season. Meanwhile, Joe Musgrove is expected to return in 2026 after missing all of 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, a situation that adds uncertainty to the club’s medium-term outlook. Bringing in a pitcher like Bello would ease pressure across the staff and provide continuity beyond the next season.
Bello’s performance in 2025 supports the optimism surrounding his name. The 26-year-old posted an 11–9 record with a 3.35 ERA, striking out 124 batters over 166 innings and finishing the season with a 1.236 WHIP. For a significant portion of the campaign, he ranked among the more effective starters in baseball, combining durability with improved command and consistency.
Equally important for the Padres is Bello’s contract situation. He is currently in the third year of a six-year, $55 million deal that includes a club option for 2030, making him a cost-controlled asset at a time when San Diego is carefully managing payroll.
As the clock ticks toward Opening Day, a move for a pitcher of Bello’s profile could be the clearest path for the Padres to effectively replace Dylan Cease and stabilize their rotation heading into the new season.
