As the offseason unfolds, Orion Kerkering remains a focal point for the Phillies and their fans, nearly four months after the postseason moment that left many stunned.
On the night of October 9, 2025, Kerkering’s critical miscue in the NLDS against the Dodgers became an instant talking point, raising questions about how he could rebound in Philadelphia—or if he might find a fresh start elsewhere.
That question lingered for some teams as well. According to a feature by Matt Gelb in The Athletic, multiple organizations reached out to the Phillies about Kerkering’s availability this winter. Gelb reports, however, that “the club was not interested” in moving the 24-year-old reliever. The Phillies even called Kerkering themselves following the signing of Brad Keller, emphasizing his importance to the bullpen—a message Kerkering has clearly absorbed.
Kerkering, who will turn 25 this April, posted solid numbers in the 2025 season despite a challenging start. After a rough April, he finished the regular season with a 2.77 ERA, though inherited runners and control issues persisted. The season followed a strong first full campaign in 2024, when Kerkering recorded a 2.29 ERA with 74 strikeouts, 17 walks, and 51 hits allowed over 63 innings.
The trade rumors stemmed from the belief that Kerkering may have untapped potential, and that a change of scenery could help him find it. The Phillies, however, appear confident that Kerkering can unlock his next gear in Philadelphia, guided by offseason routines and mentoring, including input from former closer Brad Lidge.
With the bullpen solidified and Kerkering committed to proving himself, Philadelphia is betting that the 2026 season will be one of redemption and growth for the young reliever.
